Charles Street is a high rise estate in the Royston area of Glasgow. Prior to comprehensive development the land on Garnock Street and Charles Street was a tenemental slum and industrial wasteland. This was transformed into three tower blocks and several blocks of new low rise flats in just 8 months and went a long way to establishing high rises as a quick and easy solution to Glasgow's housing problems. The estate was extended in 1970 with the addition of two more tower blocks approved in the Royston 'Area C' project.
