USS Remus (ARL-40) was one of 39 Achelous-class landing craft repair ships built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Remus (along with Romulus, one of the legendary twin sons of Mars and the Vestal Rhea Silvia), she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. Originally laid down by the Kaiser Company of Vancouver, Washington 28 July 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Edward M. Argersinger; and commissioned as LST-453 on 21 January 1943 with Lieutenant A. J. Hamre, USNR, in command.
