The gamma ray scanner was a part of the sensor array of a Federation starships used to scan for or with gamma radiation. When the USS Enterprise-D was preparing to conduct a survey of the Phoenix Cluster in early 2368, lack of sensor availability necessitated the reprogramming of the gamma ray scanner for use in the survey.
