The Lau-class destroyer (aka DGN-52 class) was developed in conjuction with the Cheung-class. It replaced the LM2500 gas turbines with a pair of S6W reactors also used on the Seawolf class. This change to nuclear power allowed unlimited cruising range at max maximum speed, considered necessary for carrier operations. In nearly every other respect, it was identical. Subsequently, six of them have been upgraded with the STAR system. The remaining three are under lease to The Vineyards.
