The Support Officer is a position on board either a Starship or Starbase or other such facility that acts as back to the other departments in the Operations division. The officers and crew are cross trained in Engineering, Security and other aspects of an operation within that department. They are under the Chief Operations Officer and typically report there. The Chief Support Officer has the same rank as either the Chief engineer and the Security chief in the chain of command.
