AIVAS (Artificial Intelligence Voice-Activated System), is the designation for a sentient computer complex left by the original Colonists of Pern. The AIVAS was abandoned during the move to the Northern Continent, and soon became forgotten. It was rediscovered in the Ninth Pass during the course of exploring the reopened Southern Continent, and was ready to fulfil the mission given it by its long-dead masters to solve the problem of Thread once and for all. It restored lost knowledge to the Pernese, and set into motion the Red Star Diversion Project, which ensured that the Ninth Pass would be the last one.
