The Canadian federal election of 1989 was held on June 10, 1989 and was the first election in which parties other than the Canadian Worker's Party were permitted to participate. In a result that surprised no-one, the center-right Progressive Conservatives, led by PAC co-founder and spokesman Brian Mulroney, won 41% of the vote and formed a majority government in a coalition with regional conservative parties Social Credit and Reform, with the Liberal Party and New Democratic Party (NDP) forming an official opposition. The victory effectively ended the Communist era in Canada, with the CWP winning only five seats after having prior held every seat in the Proletarian Assembly.
