Piltsburg (Russian: Пилцбург), occasionally translated as Pilzburg, is the gubernial capital of Sitka. The city was founded in the late 1880s as a consequence of gold being discovered in the area. The city's name is in honor of Georgy Pilz, a German-born engineer who sparked the exploration of the area mineral wealth. As the city of New Archangel was selected to be the federal capital of Alaska, Piltsburg was selected to house the gubernial government of Sitka from the 1950s onward.
