Matthew started from a tropical wave emerging off the coast of west Africa, this wave became gale-force shortly before exiting, and it became Tropical Storm Matthew just off the coast. Matthew initially weakened back to a tropical wave a couple days later due to increasing wind shear coupled with dry air. Three days later after regaining its closed circulation and strength, it was once again designated as Tropical Storm Matthew. Matthew would later strengthen into a hurricane about two days later. Over the next couple of days it would become a major hurricane and later a very strong category six hurricane over the main development region, which is exceptionally rare. Matthew remained a category six until the latitude of Bermuda which it weakened back to a category five and became extratrop
