Early years in college were tough for Jones due to falling out with a new head coach. Only having one good season in college his senior year Jones attended local combines to try and play on professionally. Jones came close to playing with teams from USL First Division and USL Second Division but was not able to sign a contract. Spending all of pre season with the Orlando Sharks of the MISL things looked up for Jones but he was again unfortunate not to sign a contract. A veteran player from the MISL offered Jones to play for the Thunder Bay Chill of the USL Premier Development League.
