Cligés is the titural hero of Chrétien de Troyes’ romance of Cligés, the son of Alexander of Constantinople by Soredamors the sister of Gawain. According to Chrétien, Cligés came to Arthur’s court and on successive days defeated Sagremor, Lancelot, and Perceval in jousts. On the fourth day Cligés fought his uncle Gawain to a standstill in a swordfight. Cligés remained in Arthur’s court for a year only. Perhaps in part for this reason, Cligés seldom appears in other Arthurian tales.
