Columbia was originaly a Spanish colony under the name of New Grenada. Following the Revolutionary Wars in Europe, it stayed loyal to the new republican government of Iberia and was subdivided into departments. Following agitation by local politician Simon Bolivar, the departments were grouped together as a territorial collection called Columbia.
