Morpheus, Neo and Trinity goes to negotiate the Keymaker's release from the Chateau basement dungeon. The restaurant's owner, based on the Maitre D's reaction to Morpheus on his team's arrival, is the Merovingian himself, who sits in a reserved location surrounded by many of his henchman, accompanied by his wife, Persephone. The restaurant allows entry to many other places within the lair of the Merovingian if a proper key is used to open a door. There the Merovingian told them his belief that cause and effect, not choice, is the true seat of power within the Matrix.
