Photosynthesis is the autotrophic process by which the vast majority of autotrophs derive their food. In plants, it occurs in the thylakoids in chloroplasts. In other organisms it occurs elsewhere. Cyanobacteria, for example, are kind of like independant chloroplasts, photosynthesizing in the main cell not in any separate organelles.
