Margaret Thatcher attempted to pursue a policy directly opposed to all principles of Buskellism after her election in 1979. This proved to be unpopular and led to a landslide for Labour in the 1984 election, and since then, no party has been courageous enough to try breaking it. This ultimately resulted in the merging of the two main post-war English political parties into the British Unionist Party.
