A Dutchman called Dirk van der Stek calls to see Deirdre - he's a friend of Ray Langton's. Ray has made Tracy a present and Dirk delivers it. Deirdre feels awkward about giving the present to Tracy. He tells her that Ray has split with his girlfriend Annie after she lost her baby. Bert sets up a baby alarm for the Tilsleys. Dirk asks Deirdre out for a date on the evening she was to see Ken. Dirk tells her that he can't make any other night.
