The Otaktay (otherwise known as the Solstice Killer) was a creature that killed a number of people in Hortonville, Wisconsin every 39 years since 1734. The beast, a strange mix of owl, wolf, bear, and rabbit, was likely a tulpa or similar thoughtform, and bound to a memorial totem pole of the Helaku tribe. The totem pole had been erected in memory of 39 members of the Helaku tribe killed by the Tova tribe during the solstice celebrations of 1695. Some tribal elders believed that it had the power of the dead it memorialized and sought vengeance, a belief which may have brought the Otaktay into being.
