The 1964-03 was a Grand National (now Nextel Cup) event held at Speedway Park on December 1, 1963. Despite the '63 date, it was part of the '64 season. In one of the most controversial finishes in NASCAR history, African-American driver Wendell Scott became the first driver of his race to win a NASCAR event by holding off Buck Baker by two laps. Track officials, however, trying to prevent a mob scene from the prejudice crowd, declared that Scott had a scoring issue and it was really Baker who had won the event. Three days later, NASCAR ceded the win back to Scott in an unceremonial fashion. Still, it was a win for Scott, in fact, his only career win and still the only win by an African-American on NASCAR's top circuit. Meanwhile, eventual season champ Richard Petty finished 5th. Stats
