A noted jurist, Potter Swayne was not a politician until after his election as party leader in 3128. John Barclay resigned the leadership and multiple candidates put their names forward to replace him. It wasn't until a university student suggested Swayne as a candidate for the leadership that the media took note of him. Many speculated that Swayne would actually lose the vote and have to step down as leader of the Free Democrats. However, when the caucus exited the party's chambers, it was announced that Swayne had secured every vote.
