The old Viscount Lomasa was a gregarious, invenerate drunkard who kept a manor in the forests outside Elkmont and whiled away his days with fruitless, empty revelry and enjoyment. He was fond of his son Godric Lomasa, but was known to be hard on others. It was said that, though not fabulously wealthy, he threw energetic parties and games for his family and guests; and was fond of hunting, dogs, and the simple amusements of country life. The old Lomasa was also an avid reader in his later years, and became a student of philosophy and theology before his death.
