On 4 March 2008, Rovers had a home game against Doncaster Rovers. This was Rovers' last game before the FA Cup quarter-final against West Bromwich Albion. Rovers had lost 2-0 to Doncaster less than a month earlier, in a game that ended in Rovers only defeat between Christmas 2007 and March 2008. After the game, referee Clive Penton was widely criticised by both sets of supporters. At one point, the game was stopped for a few minutes while Mr Penton had to get advice from one of his assistants twice and also booked Lewis Haldane twice without producing a red card.
