Augmentation Upgrade Canisters are usable items in Deus Ex. They are located in various levels in the game; often in places which are difficult to find. They are rarer than augmentation canisters until later levels. An upgrade canister takes up one space in the inventory grid, and they may be used at any time by the player as a medbot is not required to install them. An upgrade canister can be used to upgrade any augmentation (except for the three default augs and Synthetic Heart) by one "level".
