A hovering lectern was a repulsorlift-powered floating desk. Colonel Julyan, who taught Strategy and Tactics at the Imperial Academy of Arkanis, sat behind one such lectern during his lessons. That allowed him to swoop around the room and look down at his students without having to walk or even stand up.
