The Nathi were an alien race that sought to exterminate humanity. The Nathi War was fought between them and the Federated Sentient Planets, and ended shortly before the colony ships left for Pern. Many of the original colonists had fought in the war in some capacity. Paul Benden had been a famous admiral, while Emily Boll had been governor of Tau Ceti during the war.
