Garr earned an Academy Award nomination in 1983 for her supporting role in the Sydney Pollack comedy Tootsie. She is also well-known for her roles in Mel Brooks' comedy classic Young Frankenstein (1974, co-starring Kenneth Mars) and Steven Spielberg's science fiction epic Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
