Desmond Carroll was born in Gotham City, to two parents who owned and operated a small circus. The circus had been owned by the Carroll family for years, though it had been suffering for years, as circus' lost their appeal with children. His parents tried to make it work, but eventually turned to a life of petty crime in order to make ends meet.
