The Republic received information that General Grievous would be passing through the Rel system in the Invisible Hand without an escort. Jedi General Shahmzar Aonda-Alci was nearby, so he volunteered to take a small force, led by himself, his Padawan Ac'churo Valnuon, and senior clone commander CC-1696 "Bryse", to intercept Grievous.
