Mercenary archers are neutral NPCs that randomly appear, either in higher-level dungeons (such as the Ancient Castle) or as summoned creatures from magic or failed spellbook reading. They will generally shoot enemies with bows, but may melee at close range. One or more may appear alongside a wandering vendor to defend them if you attack (with the "Prepare to die!" option).
