El Al (Hebrew אל על, "skyward", changed from Arabic اَلْعَال Al `Āl "the high place") is an Israeli settlement and a stream in the southern Golan Heights. Israel captured the area from Syria in June 1967 in the Six-Day War. The resemblance between a pre-existing Arabic placename and Israel's national airline is a coincidence.
