Spain, officially the Socialist Spanish Republic (Spanish: Socialista República Española), is a sovereign socialist state and a member of the Warsaw Pact located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when King Alfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which Republican candidates won the majority of votes. The republic advocated universal suffrage, abolition of ecclesiastical property, emancipation of women, and maintenance of a standing army
