The Forty-two companions cover the names of King Arthur and his men, including Merlin, when they went disguised as mercenaries to serve under King Leodegan in the Vulgate Merlin. They are sometimes referred to as the Forty companions, not including Merlin or Arthur. To confuse matters, some texts omit or corrupt some names in this fellowship, so that the number of the companions is less in some texts. Indeed, in Sommer’s edition of the Vulgate Merlin, the 32nd name is missing, because it is missing in Sommer’s A manuscript.
