In 2257, Lieutenant James T. Kirk was stationed at a phaser station on board the USS Farragut. When the starship was attacked by the dikironium cloud creature, Kirk delayed in firing at the creature. He blamed himself afterwards for not acting quick enough, for he believed that if he had, than two hundred lives, including that of Captain Garrovick – one of the finest men Kirk knew in his career, would not have been killed. It would not be until 2268 that Kirk, now captain of the USS Enterprise, would come to terms with the fact that there would have been no difference if he didn't delay firing. (TOS: "Obsession" )
