The first book tells an alternative version of the story of the Wicked Witch of the West from L. Frank Baum's famous The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Maguire's second volume relates the story of the Witch's son Liir, while the third concerns Brrr, Maguire's version of the Cowardly Lion and the fourth book tells a story about the Witch's granddaughter Rain. The original editions of all four books were illustrated by Douglas Smith.
