Jane Kendall was an English widow who kept a boardinghouse in London. In 1597 and 1598, her tenants included playwright William Shakespeare, petty criminal Peter Foster, glazier Jack Street, beggar Sam King, and "cunning woman" Cicily Sellis. Widow Kendall was extremely thrifty with her money, and would often rebuke her lodgers for piling too much firewood on the hearth when they wanted to warm themselves.
