On October 10, 3572, elements of the Dranish military, led by Brigadier General Joel Cubrero, deposed the short-lived government led by President Sun Ryoji and installed Cubrero as President and Taoiseach. Just over a year prior to the coup, Sun announced that he would assume executive power, a break from convention which dictates that the President is a largely ceremonial figurehead, in response to the deteriorating security situation and ethnic violence in Dranland. Within months, dismayed at the alleged ineptness of the Sun government, some senior military officers began planning the overthrow of the government, a move which finally occured in October 3572. Shortly afterwards, a purely military government was replaced by a largely civilian technocratic government backed by the military.
