Being the largest Arabic-speaking country, Modern Egypt is somewhat understandably a major center of modern Arab culture. The fact that it has historically been one of the most powerful countries in the region and was once the region's leading economic power also helps. For these reasons and others, Egypt--and particularly Cairo--is noted as being the number one center for Arabic culture today, despite Egypt's complex relationship with the rest of the Arab world.
