The MacGuffin is "the objet petit a, the lack, the leftover of the Real setting in motion the symbolic movement of interpretation, a void in the centre of the symbolic order, a pure semblance of the 'mystery' to be explained, interpreted" (The Sublime Object of Ideology, p. 185).
