A well defined tropical wave moved off the coast of Africa on 1650 UTC August 4th it looked really impressive already on satellite. By 0345 UTC August 5th it had organized enough to have become Tropical Depression Seven while just west of the Cape Verde Islands. Under a favorable environment including unusually warm sea surface temperatures of 87°F and low wind shear, it strengthened further to a tropical storm on 1200 UTC the same day, and was named Fred. Fred continued to strengthen and by 0800 UTC August 7th it became a minimal hurricane while veering to the north of the Leeward Islands. On 1350 UTC August 8th It started to rapidly intensify becoming a Category 6 hurricane on 1935 UTC August 10th.
