On 28 March 2009, Rovers hosted Stockport County in their 38th League One game of the 2008-09 season. The game came off the back of a defeat for Rovers, when they lost 1–0 to Peterborough United a week earlier, a result which had effectively ended the Pirates' outside chance of reaching the playoffs. The game itself was fairly one-sided, thanks to Byron Anthony giving Rovers an early lead, and the advantage being doubled by a Rickie Lambert penalty shortly before the break. Stockport rarely threatened the Rovers goal, leaving the Pirates to take a comfortable win.
