James "Jimmie" Stephens (28 January 1850 - 3 March 1929) was a businessman, local politician and leading freemason. Born in St Pancras, son of Robert Stephens, ladder maker. A director of Stephens & Carter Limited, ladder builders, of Paddington Green. He lived in Pentonville, Hampstead and then Maida Vale. From 1904-07 he sat as a Moderate Party member of the London County Council representing Paddington North. A freemason from the 1878, he was a member of numerous lodges. In 1896 he became Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies and in 1909 was made President of the Board of Benevolence.
