Possibly inspired by the weapon of choice of Sun Wukong (also known as the Monkey King), the main character in the Chinese classical novel Journey to the West. Sun Wukong achieved immortality by stealing and eating empress Xi Wangmu's peaches (pamamas?) of longevity. Notice the similarity between the in-game model and the Monkey King's staff -- which, incidentally, weighs a hefty 13,500 jīn (7,960 kilograms, or 17,550 lbs.) -- as depicted in legendary Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's 1889 print (part of his beloved One Hundred Aspects of the Moon series) in which Sun Wukong carries his magic staff and dances with the Jade Rabbit, the white rabbit that is supposed to live in the moon:
