Vespa crabro is a medium sized to large hornet. Vespa crabro is the only true hornet in north america. The hornets are actually quite calm and even comparable in behavior to polistes! This species is known to hunt vespula sp. as prey, and seeing this behavior myself, feeding vespinae sugar water, mostly vespula came, some vespa crabro and a few dolichovespula maculata. The vespa crabro dint come for the food, she came for the vespula that were there. The hornet did not stop to drink, instead grabbing a small woker of vespula germanica. The d. maculata seemed to react aggressively to the other wasps as well, but it turned out they were not trying to capture them as prey, only acting aggressively to their presence. There is a vespa crabro nest somewhere close but it is nowhere to be seen. i
