Hieraaetus, sometimes known as hawk-eagles, denotes a group of smallish birds of prey usually placed in the Buteoninae or Aquilinae subfamilies of accipitrids. They are medium-sized birds of prey inhabiting Europe, Asia, Africa, New Guinea and Australia.
