According to this estimate the cost of completing the Taj Mahal in 1648 was 32 million rupees. It is difficult to convert that to the modern-day equivalent amount, but estimates range from $100 million to $1 billion dollars. It is known that the cost of construction nearly bankrupted the Mughal Empire, and that shortly after its completion the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was deposed by his son and placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life.
