In 1904 PD, Cartwright held the rank of Commander and served as Rear Admiral Mark Sarnow's staff operations officer for Battlecruiser Squadron 5, based on Hancock Station. He went on a tour of the newly arrived battlecruiser HMS Nike and attend a staff meeting. He later fought in the First Battle of Hancock. (HH3)
