The Pontifex Maximus was the high priest of the College of Pontiffs. Traditionally the position was open only to patricians until 254 BC, when a plebeian first occupied this post. Though during the Republic this was considered a deeply religious position, it gradually became politicized, Augustus assumed the title of Pontifex Maximus in 12BC.
