From the Wikipedia page [1] The Wimbledon and Croydon Railway Company was incorporated 8 July 1853 to build a railway between Wimbledon and Croydon in south west London. The line opened on 22 October 1855 and in 1856 was leased to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway which bought it outright in 1858.
