After a Year without Ariel, Raine seems to have found a cure (with some questionable help). The downside is the cure somehow takes far more materials than she's got access to. In order to collect these materials she's turned to the Factions for help. Pitting faction against faction she promised a reward to the team that would bring her the most materials.
