A unit of the apparatus was found in the sonic shower of a Federation Starfleet officer's quarters. It would be used to beam clothing on and off the user. It is unknown if other starfaring races used this technology, or if it was used in the Federation after the transition to new uniforms in 2278. The technology's use was never seen in filmed Trek aside from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
