General Varana is of the House of Anadiles. He is adopted by Ran Borune XXIII, and is later crowned as Ran Borune XXIV. "Unofficially" Varana accompanies the Tolnedran legions that joined Ce'Nedra at the Battle of Thull Mardu. When Ran Borune XXIII dies, Varana is crowned Emperor of Tolnedra and adopts the Borune name, becoming Ran Borune XXIV. Belgarion, King of Riva, shows his support at Ran Borune XXIII's funeral for Varana through a speech whilst leaning on his giant sword holding the Orb of Aldur.
